Title: A Mother’s Goodbye (Title change from A Mother’s Choice)
Author: Kate Hewitt
Genre: Contemporary Fiction
Publication Date: June 13, 2018
Heather just discovered that she is pregnant…again. How did this happen? She and Kevin already have three beautiful daughters and they are barely making ends meet as it is. Several years ago, Kevin was injured at work and is now primarily confined to his chair at home unable to work, leaving it to Heather to provide for the family.
Heather now must make one of the hardest decisions of her life, what to do about this baby growing inside her. She and Kevin know, no matter how much they want to, they cannot keep it. They simply cannot afford to care for another person in their house and they do not want to take anything away from the three children they already have. Heather also knows that she cannot get rid of the growing child, so she has but one option left. She will have to find an adoptive family. Heather decides single, wealthy Grace will be the perfect woman adopt their child. However, when unexpected news comes their way, it will have devastating effects for all of them.
I do not read books in this genre very frequently, not because I don’t like them (I do!), but because they are so sad and they hit you where it hurts. A Mother’s Goodbye did just that, and I loved it! I found the story to be like nothing I have ever read before and ending in a place I did not expect. As I made my way through this story I found myself being reminded somewhat of Jodi Picoult, a favorite of mine within this genre.
This story is told in alternating perspective between Heather and Grace. Through Heather we see the difficult decision she made in giving up her child and the impact that it had on her family, while at the same time through Grace we see how the adoption impacted her life and that of the child.
A Mother’s Goodbye is a powerful story of family, love, and sacrifice and how a single decision can have powerful consequences.
