When a second child goes missing and is feared dead in Wind Gap, Missouri second rate journalist Camille Preaker is sent back to her home town to get the inside story. Reluctant to return, her fatherly boss Curry insists they get the exclusive before anyone else as it may be just the story they need to get their second class Chicago newspaper to stardom.
Camille reluctantly returns to her childhood home and tries to reconnect with her estranged mother, half-sister, and a childhood tragedy that she has never truly come to terms. With the help of some of the residents, many of whom were old high school friends, she slowly begins piecing together what happened to the two girls and realizes the mystery runs lot deeper and darker than anyone ever thought.
I will admit that I went into this book a bit skeptical. I read Gone Girl several years back and did not think that it lived up to all the hype. Don’t get me wrong, it was good, but that is the thing with hype, it tends to ruin a lot of good books. So, I did not really expect a lot from this book and I was pleasantly surprised. While I was able to figure out what happened to the girls before the ending, I still found it to be a good thriller. It held my attention and kept me turning those pages until the very end. I would like to point out that this a deeply disturbing book, as per the author MO, so be forewarned.
I am looking forward to watching the TV series adapted from this book starting this week. The characters are all so unlikeable, untrusting, and dysfunctional.
Anyone else read the book or started this TV series? What do you think?
My rating: ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ 1/2
I agree with your assessment of this book and your take on “Gone Girl.” I still can’t get over how many people I know that love that book. I definitely liked “Sharp Objects” more, but I still think that I like “Dark Places” the most of all her books, though I have just read the three I mentioned.

I loved Sharp Objects! To be honest, the mini-series looks too intense for me! I may check out the reviews and if they are good, I’ll watch the series.

I have yet to read Dark Places, but I do own it. I hear they are making a movie/show out that one too, so I guess I better get on that one too! 🙂

They made a movie of it with Charlize Theron a couple years ago. I wouldn’t bother with that movie. The book was much better.

I liked “ Dark Places” the best of Gillian Flynn but was disappointed with the movie(rarely is a movie adaptation good). I agree with your review of “Sharp Objects”, predictable but I couldn’t stop reading it. The characters are cringe-worthy. I’ve just started the HBO series today and interested to see how it differs from the book; particularly how the series was going to portray her scars(physical).

I heard the same thing in an earlier comment about Dark Places. That is too bad it did not turn out good. I have not yet started the Sharp Objects series, but will in the next few days. I am looking forward to seeing the characters, they are very interesting in this one.
