I felt like the last person on the planet who had not read Ready Player One last year when I received it from Book of the Month.  It is really not the kind of book I generally read, young adult and techy sci-fi, but I thought with so much hype and all the 80’s talk surrounding it I would give it a try.  I am really glad I did because I really had a good time with it!  Like I said, I got it last year, but when I heard that it was being made into a movie I decided to wait to read it so the story would be fresh in my mind when I saw it.  So the time had finally come and my fiancee kept asking if I going to read it in time because he is a HUGE video game fan and I won’t see a movie until I have read the book.

For those who have not read Ready Player One, if there are any left out there, it takes place in a dystopian USA in the 2040’s.  The county is facing a major energy crisis, there is mass poverty, and many people are now without a means of travel.  As a means of escape many now spend all their free time in the OASIS, a virtual world that can simulate anything and everything you could want.  When one of the developers dies and had no one to pass his inheritance on to it is discovered that he created a puzzle hidden within the OASIS, one that will lead to the ultimate prize.  Only problem is that everyone is trying to find the hidden clues and many will do anything to find the prize.

I loved all the 80’s references that were found throughout this book, and there were a LOT of them oozing out of every page.  I had a really good time reading this book, it was cheesy in places, funny in others, and like being in a video games in others.  Mostly it was just a nice laid back read that was very different from my normal mystery/thriller reads that have a totally different vibe.

I am glad that I waited to read this until now. I am excited to see how the movie turns out and hope that they are able to do it justice.  I have not seen the trailer yet, so I have no idea how it looks…

Rating: ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐

Have you read the book and/or seen the movie/trailer?  Any thoughts?

Happy Reading!
